Change Is Overdue For The Tibetans

Today's Way Khool Site is: Avaaz Organization

I signed the petition several days ago, and last I looked there was already 466,418 signatures on the petition to Stand With Tibet and Support the Dalai Lama.

As you're probably aware of the sad news coming from Tibet, another bloody conflict is happening between the Tibetans and the Chinese....and as usual, the Tibetans are suffering!

Here's what the Avaaz website says about this:

"After decades of repression, Tibetans are crying out to the world for change. China's leaders are right now making a crucial choice between escalating brutality or dialogue that could determine the future of Tibet, and China.

We can affect this historic choice -- China does care about its international reputation. But it will take an avalanche of global people power to get the government's attention. The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has called for restraint and dialogue: he needs the world's people to support him. Fill out the form below to sign the petition--and spread the word. "

Won't you add your name so that Avaaz can make 1 million names?

Avaaz also supports other great causes, so take time to check out their other good work while you're visiting their site.

On another note: I'm taking off for Spring Break and will be traveling for awhile. If you chance upon this blog while I'm gone, rummage through the several years of posts. There's a lot of great websites and blogs I've added here.

Really Khool Tools

Today's Way Khool Blog is: Cool Tools

Cool tools is right up my alley because so many tools have answered my prayers. I no longer have to ask my strong partner with his strong hands to open tough lids on bottles for me because now I have a handy-dandy tool for this which I saw advertised on tv. Yeh!

Here's what Kevin Kelly writes:

"Cool tools really work. A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. All reviews on this site are written by readers who have actually used the tool and others like it. Items can be either old or new as long as they are wonderful. We only post things we like and ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted. Tell me what you love."

Hey, maybe Way Khool Sites could even be considered for inclusion! Hmmmm......

Munching Local Style

Today's Way Khool Site is: 100 Mile Diet

It's becoming smarter to eat produce that hasn't traveled from far away. And this website makes it easy for you to determine where to purchase food within 100 miles from your home. Simply type in your zip code to retrieve the names of local producers. Their motto is, "Local Eating For Global Change." Hey, this is great idea whose time has come!

You can join their movement on this page, share your stories, order their two books, and/or donate should you choose.

This is what they write:

"When the average North American sits down to eat, each ingredient has typically travelled at least 1,500 miles—call it "the SUV diet." On the first day of spring, 2005, Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon (bios) chose to confront this unsettling statistic with a simple experiment. For one year, they would buy or gather their food and drink from within 100 miles of their apartment in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Since then, James and Alisa have gotten up-close-and-personal with issues ranging from the family-farm crisis to the environmental value of organic pears shipped across the globe. They've reconsidered vegetarianism and sunk their hands into community gardening. They've eaten a lot of potatoes.

Their 100-Mile Diet struck a deeper chord than anyone could have predicted. Within weeks, reprints of their blog at thetyee.ca had appeared on sites across the internet. Then came the media, from BBC Worldwide to Utne magazine. Dozens of individuals and grassroots groups have since launched their own 100-Mile Diet adventures. The need now is clear: a locus where 100-milers can get the information they need to try their own lifestyle experiments, and to exchange ideas and develop campaigns. That locus will be here at 100MileDiet.org—turning an idea into a movement."

It's Easy Being Green

Today's Way Khool Site is: Green Drinks

With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, you may want to check out the Green Drinks organization and make some new like-minded friends and meet kindred spirits. No, this organization isn't Irish, although some of their members might be. It's a different kind of green. Green Drinks is an international organization active in 354 cities worldwide (even on my island of Maui!) which helps you connect with other 'greenies'. Here's what they write about themselves:

"Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up for a beer at informal sessions known as Green Drinks.

We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made welcome. Just say, "are you green?" and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network."
